The European highest rate regarding the number of trips per person per year : 4 in average and 8 for the high-revenue segment.
Departure rate for all destinations in 2004 : 75 % and for travels abroad : 24,2 % (this rate has not been so high since 1997 !). This rate is higher for the cities’ inhabitants and the high-revenue segment.
Average length of stay abroad : 7,6 overnights = from 6,6 overnights for travels in Europe to 9 overnights in Africa, 11,1 overnights in America and around 12 overnights in Asia or Oceania (the further travelled, the longer the stay).
International tourism expenditure by French : 25 billion € (+27 % / 2001) :
N° 5 after Germany, US, UK and Japan.
Average expenditure per travel : 1431 € (+41 % / 2001) : N° 3 of the European countries after Spain & Belgium.
Use of the travel trade (tour operators & travel agencies) remains high among outbound holidaymakers : 58 % for travels abroad (including French overseas departments) and up to 77 % when flight booking is necessary. Moreover, more than the half of outbound holidaymakers book “all inclusive” packages.
Holiday time for French people means evasion, discovery & rupture with the daily constraints. For a long time, the French tourists activities were reduced to the “3 S” : Sea, Sand and Sun; nowadays, their motivations are really diversified and correspond to “Relaxing, Entertainment and Personal development” with strong interests for sports activities, adventure tourism, cultural & discovery tourism, artistic practices, and discovery of the others in order to better know oneself !
